Latest News > The Medical Research Network is Launched

01-03-2007

The Medical Research Network (MRN) Ltd, previously a Division of Healthcare at Home Ltd, wishes to announce its formation as a separate company through a demerge and MBO, led by Dr Graham Wylie, CEO of the new company. The MRN is a Clinical Trial Support Organisation, and continues to work closely with Healthcare at Home to provide a portfolio of services – outsourced Trial Management Support, Site Support based around research nurses, centralised trial Pharmacy Support and Home Trial Support. Combined, these services represent a creative approach to address the key issues and challenges relating to clinical trials within the UK. The company is led by an experienced management team from Pharma and CRO backgrounds.

The Medical Research Network recognised the growing need for a totally new dimension to running clinical trials in the UK. The growth in biologicals and complex chemotherapy with short shelf lives and requiring cold chain logistics created the initial demand for trial drug administration by nurses in the patient’s own home within hours of compounding the product. This initially progressed to performing the more routine elements of clinical trials in the patient’s own home which not only freed up resources at the hospital, it also appealed to patients therefore improving recruitment and retention.

Today the MRN has in house Project Managers who run teams of nurses working in investigational sites anywhere in the UK, collecting and cleaning data then handled by the MRN Data Management team for preparation for a study report. The MRN is capable of running small and mid sized trials in the UK, or can take part in larger multi-national trials. Our unique model allows us to run appropriate trial visits in the patient’s home, provide study medication to those patients at home or to investigator sites anywhere in the UK, boosting patient recruitment and retention. Our model allows trials to run faster, for less cost.

Recent research showed that many investigators in the UK do not take part in trials because they do not have the nursing or pharmacy support necessary. Hundreds of physicians from our database have told us they would like to take part in clinical trials but cannot due to a lack of nursing and pharmacy resources. The MRN is perfectly placed to send nurses into such sites and to provide central pharmacy services, thus opening up huge potential patient populations for trials. Due to their relationship with Healthcare at Home coverage is UK-wide with significant experience in many therapeutic areas, especially Oncology, Rheumatology, Neurology, and a host of rare conditions.

With their UK reach, direct management of the nursing and pharmacy staff and unique operating models, the MRN represents a major step forward in the implementation of clinical research in this country.

The MRN has the experience and expertise to run clinical trials to the highest quality standards. Their CEO, Dr Graham Wylie, has over 17 years experience in the Pharma and CRO industry, with 10 years at Pfizer in European and global roles and 5 years at PAREXEL International running the Northern European medical function and subsequently the European Account Management team. The MRN management team also includes Mr Paul Bodfish, Director of Data Management, with over 15 years experience in Pharma and CRO companies, Mr Stuart Redding, Director of Project Management,, with over 12 years of Pharma and CRO experience, and Ms Helena Baker, with over 20 years of experience in nursing, home care and pharmacy services.
